THE WRITING’S ON THE WALL. House renovations in 2014 set me free to paint, in giant letters, some of my favorite quotes from beloved writers such as Virginia Woolf on the walls of my house on Roanoke Island. “The day waves yellow with all its crops,” evokes such joy in me, I loved seeing this quote from The Waves in my stairwell. So you can only imagine how humbling it felt, a few years later, to have a New York Times bestselling author compare my writing to Woolf’s, and a book editor at Hogarth, Woolf’s namesake press, to pay high compliments to Between Tides. I printed out and hung her comment on the bookshelf in my study, which helped me to believe that someday my writing would find its way into a book, if not onto a wall.
